Flanders, a region of Belgium with 5.8 million inhabitants occupying an area of 5,200 square miles, has experienced wide-spread industrialization and growth in the last 30 years. As a result, the region is generating an increasing amount of municipal solid waste (MSW). Bordering Luxembourg, the Neth-erlands, France and Germany and known for its lace, beer and chocolates, Belgium is comprised of three regions, Brussels, Flanders and Wal-lonia.
